Made in Yorkshire is proud to support The Leeds Manufacturing Festival (LMF) October 2018. This is the first of what is intended to be an annual event to connect the young people of Leeds to the manufacturers of Leeds. The event closely follows the format of the Manufacturing Day event held annually in the USA (http://www.mfgday.com/ ) to show the public modern manufacturing in action and inspire the next generation of skilled workers.
The primary aim of the festival is to get as many manufacturers as possible to either visit a local school to speak about their company and careers in manufacturing or host a school visit at their factory to enable young people to understand what modern manufacturing actually encompasses. Although LMF are targeting the week of 8th – 12th October, please do not exclude yourselves just because the dates may not fit, any event close to the week in question can come under LMF banner! This is an exciting opportunity for businesses as well as for the young people of Leeds.
The image of manufacturing is improving nationally, but as we know historically there has been at best mixed press. As a result most people today and particularly young people still do not have an appreciation or understanding of how big, successful and important the manufacturing sector is to our city and region. In particular Leeds have around 1,800 manufacturing companies mainly SMEs generating wealth and offering rewarding career opportunities for around 26,000 people. It is precisely these organisations including national and multi-nationals that LMF would like to attract to reflect the diverse range of businesses in operation. Regardless of size, recruitment and getting the right employee-employer fit remains challenging for us all, this is our chance to help enhance the image of the sector and promote compelling career paths for the future.
